DO Take Out Insurance

This is your first and most important must-do. Do your research as some insurers offer more than others. Often, if you already have an existing insurance policy for your home, there is a way for your jewellery to be added it to it. The proper appraisal is important to ensure your ring is replaced at its full value if it is lost or stolen.

DON’T Remove In Public

It sounds so simple, but when it comes to washing your hands in a public bathroom or applying hand cream in the back of a cab resist the temptation to remove your ring. You’ll naturally be pre-occupied and could run the risk of leaving the ring on the sink ledge, losing it down the drain or leaving it on your lap and exiting the cab none-the-wiser until you look down at your bare finger hours later!

 DO Take It Off Sometimes

It may seem contradictory to the point above, but it’s important to remove your ring in situations that might compromise its safety. For example, working out at the gym, doing the housework, washing dishes and laundry can all put stress on your ring and even cause stones to loosen.

DON’T Expose Your Ring To Harsh Chemicals

Bleach and other cleaning agents can dull your ring’s shine and weaken gemstones. It’s best to remove your ring when touching harsh chemicals or if that’s not possible, wear rubber gloves.

DO Resize

The excitement of getting engaged could tempt you to wear a ring that is too big. This is a recipe for disaster. Instead, take it back to the jeweller as soon as possible and have it resized to fit perfectly.

DON’T Leave It Too Long To A Schedule Maintenance Appointment With Your Jeweller

At least once a year it’s a good idea to take your ring back to your jeweller for a thorough check to make sure claws are tight, the diamond isn’t loose and there are no fissures in the shank. You might also want to have your band re-dipped and your stone/s professionally cleaned.

DO Keep It Clean

We understand it’s not always possible to make it back to the jeweller for a professional clean. This easy at-home solution will help to you keep your engagement ring sparkling. Fill a cup with equal parts cold water and ammonia. Soak ring/s for 30 minutes, remove and with a toothbrush gently brush around the setting. Swish in the solution and then leave to dry.
