Spotlight On: My Little Peony
My Little Peony is a one-stop shop for lots of your wedding styling and floral needs. They have a very cool caravan bar, can whip up amazing dessert stations or grazing tables, do full-scale event styling, wedding flowers and also hire out props. We chatted to owner Tegan Gillam to find out more about her business, which has been showcasing at our NSW events for the past few years.
How did you end up in the wedding business? Completely by accident after taking a short course in floristry and looking for an alternative to the 9-5 corporate world I’d been in for 10 + years.
What do you love most about weddings? Every single one is different and unique but all celebrate such raw and special emotions in their own way.
If you had to describe your business in one word, what would it be? Versatile
What kind of bride and groom is typical to your business? Super relaxed and casual couples looking to get married on acreage or the family farm, the type of couple who appreciate the finer details and overall aesthetic of a gorgeous wedding but also want to ensure their guests have a fabulous experience on the day – they really make sure it isn’t all about them.
Any celebrity weddings you have worked on? Nope, not yet – although we have poured a few celebrities from The Block and Home and Away a beverage or two from Peony, the vintage caravan bar!
Other memorable weddings? Seven-metre hanging ceiling installation above a 9-metre custom bridal table. Over 1000 bunches of flowers, 385 guests equalled one massive wedding at Doltone House Jones Bay Wharf – need we say more!
A typical work day for you is? Early morning trips to the Sydney flower markets, emails, flower deliveries, event quotes, event planning and logistics, booking cakes and dessert orders with our preferred bakers etc. Then on a weekend, it's installing floral arches, table arrangements, delivering bridal party florals and/or pouring cocktails at the bar – a pretty mixed bag really!
How would you describe your business style? Relaxed and on trend.
What is your favourite wedding ‘first dance song’? "My Same" by Adele.
What is the one big mistake you see couples make all the time? Not taking the time to stop and look around on their big day, enjoy all the little moments, time with their partners and the fact that all of their loved ones are there to celebrate with them. So many of our couples say to us at the end of the night how quickly the entire day has gone and how they feel like they haven’t stopped to enjoy it.
What’s the best piece of advice you could give to a couple getting married? Do things that reflect you both as a couple, it’s your day, incorporate your personalities and your style – even if it is a bit quirky or eclectic – your guests and vendors will appreciate something different and you will feel more comfortable and relaxed.
What trends do you think will be big in the year ahead in weddings? Acrylic signage is the new timber, neon is the new marquee light and florals are overgrown, unstructured, wild and oversized! Plus we expect to see more brides wearing colour, making the gown less traditional and more a reflection of her unique personality and style.
